Charity of the Season
Be a Gunner, Be a Runner for Save the Children
As part of AISA's support for the Club’s chosen charity of the season, Save The Children, we are actively promoting registration for this year’s ‘Be a Gunner. Be a Runner’ event at The Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 31st March 2012.
Last year various AISA members took part including committee member, John Stephens. If you are looking for a New Year challenge then the 10-lap fun run around the concourse of the stadium could be just the event! Anyone aged 15 or over (as of 31/03/12) that would like to take part can sign up now for the 6.4km race by completing the application form here.
Following the success of last year’s event, there will also be two special junior races on the day for youngsters aged 14 and under. Visit www.arsenal.com/juniorgunners to find out more.
Entry to the race for adults costs £15 and all runners are encouraged to raise at least £100 in sponsorship. Any runner that manages to raise over £500 for the charity will be deemed a ‘Top Gunner’ and will receive a special gold running number on race day. Participants will receive a series of weekly newsletters featuring a host of useful training and fundraising advice, as well as a full event guide ahead of race day.
Last year’s event was the most successful to date, attracting 700 adult and junior runners and raising in excess of £50,000 for charity. This year, the Club is hoping to do even better and go global.
For the first time ever, supporters outside of the UK are being encouraged to participate in the event either individually or in groups, by setting up their own 6.4km challenge on 31st March within their own territory. Every runner that signs up will receive an official race number to wear on the day and everyone that sends through photos or videos of themselves in action will feature in an exclusive international gallery on Arsenal.com and stand the chance of winning an exclusive prize from the Club. To enter, simply find and contact your nearest local Supporters’ Club branch at www.arsenal.com/supportersclubs.
Speaking about the event, Gunners midfielder Alex Song said: Be a Gunner. Be a Runner is always a great event that seems to get bigger and better every year! Myself and the other players have been lucky enough to see some of the incredible work that Save the Children does, so by signing up for the run you will be helping to make a real difference to the lives of many young people.”
Justin Forsyth, chief executive of Save the Children added “Despite being little more than six months into our partnership with Arsenal, we have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity that staff and supporters have shown to date. Our dedicated match-day back in November was a huge success and I’m sure Be a Gunner. Be a Runner will be another thoroughly enjoyable occasion that will help us continue our efforts to give more children the chance of a brighter future.”
All funds raised from the event will go towards the Club’s partnership with Save the Children, supporting a range of education projects in the UK and overseas, helping the poorest children get a better start in life and giving them the chance to grow and fulfil their potential. Through this work, the Club will help Save the Children towards its vision of transforming the lives of over three million children a year through education by 2013.
