Queensland Road application

Queensland Road application

The Islington Council east area planning sub-committee met to make the decision on the planning application. Venue: the Crescent Suite, 70 Ronalds Road, N5.

Many thanks to everyone who attended this meeting on Tuesday evening. Following protracted debate, which included an excellent speech from Emma Shepherd (a Board member of the Arsenal Supporters Trust) the application for the redevelopment of the Queensland Road area was agreed by 5-1, being supported by all the Labour and LibDem councillors present, with only the Green Party against. Very good news for Arsenal and many benefits for Islington, so a good night's work.

AISA is urging Arsenal supporters to attend a key council meeting at which the Club's Queensland Road development plans will be decided.

This is the final stage in the Club's move to The Emirates Stadium, and there are concerns that the redevelopment of the Queensland Road area is being used as a political football, and that the current instability in the local authority means there is the possibility that planning permission may be blocked.

Should this happen it will have a detrimental effect on Arsenal's finances, and this could be of some significance at this time. It will also threaten the Club's ability to build a community sports centre and could result in the loss of hundreds of affordable homes being built in Islington.

Following discussion AISA decided to actively support the planning application as we believe the application has many advantages for the area, as well as for supporters, and has important economic benefits at this difficult time.

More information about the application can be found in the Planning Major Applications section of the Islington council website

Key Facts

In total the area will benefit from over 3,000 new homes across all three development sites in Islington, of which 44% will be designated as affordable housing.

When the final residential development is completed at Queensland Road, there will be approximately 4,500 new residents, who will have a significant positive impact on the local economy as they begin to use local shops and services.

Overall, 39,580 sq.m of commercial floorspace will be created across all three development sites, which is expected to generate 2,650 new full and part-time jobs.

As part of the Queensland Road application, a new sports centre will be introduced on a similar basis as the former sports centre at Highbury.

Arsenal Football Club has invested over £7.5 million to improve public transport to the Emirates Stadium.
